Lavender essential oil for Dogs

DR 3

Hello! Last time I promised to introduce you to Lavender. But first, let me tell you just how awesome she is. A 15ml bottle of Lavender takes 27 square feet of Lavender plants. There are 300 drops in a 2 ml bottle so one drop of Lavender oil equals 83 square centimetres of plant material. Now that’s what I call concentrated!

Essential oils really are a powerhouse of super concentrated stuff. They hold all the memory and immune system of the plant it’s made from. Every time you use them, you get the goods too. So keep that in mind when you slather yourself with oils. One drop really does go a very long way!!

Now, I want to tell you about how Raili uses it with her four legged friend,Tess.  She is a six year old Maltese Cross Terrier. A sensitive little soul, there are certain things she has made very clear are definitely not on her list of favourite things. Top of that list is having her nails clipped. A close second comes the ‘sensitive and intimate parts’. Over the years a tolerable routine has been established. The clipping is done in bite size bits spread over a few days. Accompanied by generous lashings of liver treats. Then Young Living Oils came into the picture three years ago and  it all got much better. They both love Lavender oil. Tess recognises the smell even before the bottle is opened. She sits down and waits. It’s rubbed on to her tummy the night before and then just before  clipping. She co-operates for longer periods. And gently lets Raili know when she has had enough for the day. In between ‘treatment episodes’ she is perky and happy. Lavender oil has taken the trauma out of clipping! Here’s Tess’ version of the events –

Oh boy, how annoying !! All that fur between my toes is driving me c- r- r- r- a- a- a–z- y. Stuff gets stuck in it. It gets itchy and uncomfortable. I just have to nibble and scratch at it all the time. And you know what that means. She will see.  My toe nails are too long as well. They click and clack on the floor when I walk and run around. It’s a wonder she hasn’t already noticed.

I wonder when she’s going to notice? I want her to. But then, I don’t want her to ‘cos I know what’s going to happen next. THE TREATMENT!  She’ll decide my fur is too long as well. So out will come the scissors, and that noisy thing. And worst of all – THE NAIL CLIPS!!!!!!  Oh, I mustn’t forget the liver treats. I do love, love, love those!

Oh oh!! Here she comes. She’s got that determined look on her face. I just know what’s going to happen. I don’t like it!!!

What’s she doing now? She’s got that nice smelly bottle in her hand. I really like that smell. Makes me feel so good. A bit like when I’m really relaxed and happy. Calm. Sleepy.

She’s putting some of it in that funny looking thing on the shelf. That’s new. Kinda interesting.  It blows out all this smoky looking stuff that has nice smells in it. She’s  putting some of that stuff from the bottle in it. Same as she did in my bath water yesterday. Makes my fur soft and it smells nice too.

Hang on a minute!! She always gives me a bath the day before I have THE TREATMENT. I know the routine inside out and back to front. First she’ll pick me up and put some of that stuff on the bottoms of my paws of all places!! It’s just weird, isn’t it?! Sometimes she rubs it on my belly as well. Then she’ll put me on the table and start with the scissors. My ears first. Then the fur around my paws. And – well, this is a bit embarrassing really. Can you believe she actually trims the fur around my – ahem – bum!!! Yeah, I’m not kidding! Next it’s that noisy thing all over. That’s not too bad. Feels kinda nice now that I’m used to the noise. And the last thing, which I REALLY HATE is the nail clips…it’s sooo hard not to snap and bite her. But I don’t want to hurt her. I really do love her lots ‘n lots. I curl my lip and growl instead just so she knows she’s pushing it. And I always, always give her lots of kisses afterwards.

Here she comes. All sweet and lovey dovey. Oh well, might as well get this over and done with. I rather like the attention and it’s really not as bad as I make it out to be.

Finished! I feel kinda nice now – clean, light, happy. No more annoying itches. She tells me I look gorgeous. Gives me lots of cuddles and kisses. And liver treats. Think I’ll go and play outside in the sun for a while now. Might even have a nap in my favourite patch of flowers.
